Type 1 diabetes cured through stem cell treatment

Quote:
In a breakthrough trial, 15 young patients with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes were given drugs to suppress their immune systems followed by transfusions of stem cells drawn from their own blood.

The best part is that the treatment uses non-embryonic stem cells, so politicians will (hopefully) stay out of it.

Wow. That is truly amazing news. Seems it only works for the newly-diagnosed, though. I mean, not that that's not great for them, because it is and I'm glad for them. But when you've had it for 21 years? Those little insulin-producing cells are all pretty well dead. I look forward to the day they can actually grow some new cells to put back into those of us for whom the other treatment is too late to work. But I am pretty excited about this anyway. It's such a breakthrough.
