Event Purdue Skeptics Society Guest Speaker (October 28th)

Who: Purdue Skeptics Society
What: Guest Speaker Debbie Goddard
Where: Psychology room 3187. (Enter through the doors of the hallway between Psychology and Pierce Halls)
When: 4:30 pm (after the football game ) on Saturday, October 28th, 2006
Debbie Goddard is the Field Organizer from The Center For Inquiry. She is flying in from Buffalo to speak about Science Education, Skepticism, Freedom of Inquiry in all areas of human endeavor, and what her organization can do for Purdue.
We can also talk about how members can get involved more on the national level, and the possibility of having a major event on campus in the future, somewhat like the one described here http://www.campusfreethought.org/press/22mar04.htm, which attracted nearly 4,000 students.
Probably 10 students will receive a free issue of “Skeptical Inquirer” or “Campus Inquiry” magazines. The presentation is expected to last 55 to 80 minutes.
Purdue Skeptic Society’s last guest speaker was in March.

Maybe they should invite one of the ghosthunter retards from the Sci-Fi channel. Have a debate.

God I hate those guys.

Suggestion Change of meeting location

There's a change of meeting location. That room in the basement must be already reserved for somebody else. The new location is PSYC (Psychology) room 3187. I'm going to try to edit the room number in my first post and change it to bold.

One of you posted about the Ghost Hunters. Go look at http://randi.org/jr/111204hot.html for the heading, "CAUTION: PLUMBERS AT WORK". It was written by Don, the previous president of Purdue Skeptics Society. He's now graduated. For part of the September meeting, we watched the segment of about 7 minutes of The Ghost Hunters being interviewed by Conan O'Brian from last May. It was kind of cheesy or kind of "gee-whiz." I don't remember the names of the two guys, but I suppose we are both talking about the same two people. I've never watched an episode of Ghost Hunters yet.

Wait a second, have you ever played Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World? Mario and Luigi were also two plumbers and also went into haunted houses.

Do I know you two guys who have just posted? Have we met before?

It is a mystery why people believe in ghosts and other weird things.

I hate Ghosthunters because they pretend to be somewhat conservative in their investigations- they 'disprove' 2/3 of the 'paranormal activty' they or other people observe. Which is a cheap fucking trick to get people to believe that the other third isn't bogus.

No, I don't know you.

Ahh, the roto-rooter guys on Sci-Fi that also happen to go around recording spooky things. I've seen a decent number of episodes because I'm interested in the phenomena, though I think of it more as a hallucinatory manifestation of the human mind rather than a measurable physical manifestation.

There was one incident though that stood out in my mind as interesting and that was their investigation at St. Augustine's famous lighthouse. Unfortunately the video has been removed from YouTube but it was an eyebrow-raiser nonetheless.

OK. You must be Patrick from ROTC.

I've never heard of that St. Augustine lighthouse.

I saw some new faces at the meeting. I had forgotten to say that if you want to be on The Purdue Skeptics Society e-mail list, then contact me.

I have issues of the November/December 2006 Skeptical Inquirer and a few order forms left over. I also have issues of the April/May 2006 Free Inquiry left over. Please go to the next Purdue Skeptics Society meeting if you would like one. They printed too many copies or a bookstore in Canada lost interest in stocking the shelves with it. Debbie would have thrown these extra magazines away if we didn't give them out.

If I have time, I want to update the Purdue Skeptics Society web site with another html file on Halloween night. It will have some information about the origins of Halloween and some theatrical online ghost-themed videos.

Suggestion Time Change for next meeting

There's been a change for this meeting. The next meeting will be Thursday, November 9th at 7 pm instead of the normal time of 6 pm. It will still be in Psychology room B127 as the first two meetings were.

November 9th Meeting

Next Meeting:

Who: Purdue Skeptics Society
What: Info about the events and concepts going on in the 1st Century BC, the 1st Century AD, and why the description of Jesus from The Dead Sea Scrolls isn't consistent with Jesus from the Bible.
When: November 9th, 2006 starting at 7 pm (Instead of 6 pm) for 60 to 75 minutes
Where: Psychology Building Room B127

Basically the meeting will be about the Dead Sea Scrolls. I will be showing a video, giving out free magazines, and spending some time talking about some things that I want presented before school is out in May.

December 7th at 6 pm

Next Meeting:

Who: Purdue Skeptics Society
What: The Nativity
When: December 7th, 2006 starting at 6 pm for 60 to 70 minutes
Where: Psychology Building Room B127

The meeting is about the Nativity partly because of the season and that there's a Nativity movie in theaters. We will be showing a video that is neither pro or con. The video was filmed in 2005 at sites in Egypt, Israel, and West Bank.

There are some problems with the Nativity story that we've grown up with. For example, Matthew and Mark or Matthew and Luke both mention details about the Nativity that the other doesn't.

Why did nobody seem to notice the Star of Bethlehem except for the three wise men, Matthew, Joseph's family, and possibly King Herod? A good theory is that the Star of Bethlehem was Venus, Jupiter, and the Regulus star lining up in July to August 3 BC in the astrology of the Babylonians and/or Persians. Draw your own conclusion as to whether the three wise men were Babylonians, Persians, or had ancestry from both lands.

Curiously enough, there is no mention in the Bible of Jesus being born on Christmas eve or December 25th. December 25th was already important for the Solstice/Equinox, Saturnalia, and the birthday of Mithras, the Persian God of Light. However, the Persians called him Mitra. You'll see other important things going on from the first century BC and first century AD.

I will show an Astronomy computer program explaining the conjunctions of 6 and 3 BC. We will talk about other parts of the story.

I will try to explain the mystery.

-Matt
